Summer Reading List

Summer is short when your children attend Japanese school, six weeks to be exact. (For some, it’s five!) And yet, after the first few years of longing with nostalgia for American summer (which still rears it’s ugly head sometimes), I’ve come to feel that this amount of time is enough of a break to be able to restart school somewhat refreshed. Particularly this year, after our move to a 990-square-foot home, with air-conditioning only in the main living space and our bedroom, I’m feeling that six weeks with all of us at home will be PUH-LEN-TY. (Ahem.)

This summer we are going to focus on clean eating, reading books, and staying cool (i.e. lounging inside or being submerged in a body of water — if not’s not one of those two places, I won’t be participating). I’m hoping to make significant progress through the following list of books in the coming weeks:

“The Poisonwood Bible” by Barbara Kingsolver
“Jude the Obscure” by Thomas Hardy
“The Longing for Home” by Fredrick Buechner
“A Wrinkle in Time” by Madeline L’Engle
“Wildwood” by Colin Meloy
“Behind the Beautiful Forevers” by Catherine Boo
“I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings” by Maya Angelou
“Bird by Bird” by Anne Lamott
“Summer of Great Grandmother” by Madeline L’Engle
